Adding & Subtracting Decimals Song
The overnight delivery service is scurrying around to get their packages to all of the stores in the city before sunrise. As they drive, they rap and sing about adding decimals and subtracting the decimal values of their various packages. The NUMBEROCK night shift crew line up the tenths, hundredths, and thousandths when adding and subtracting decimals, and so should you!
Song Lyrics:
Three hundred one-thousandths minus two-tenths:
line up the tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.
When right of a number there’s an empty space,
writing zeroes can help by holding the place.
The decimal point drops directly below,
so that the points line up in a row.
Subtract each place value to find the difference
equals one hundred one-thousandths.
Chorus:
To find the sum or difference
it just makes sense
to line up the tenths,
hundredths, and thousandths.
To add five-hundredths and six-thousandths:
line up the place values with confidence.
When right of a number there’s an empty space,
writing zeroes can help by holding the place.

Add it up, and fifty-six hundredths is the sum;
it feels so good to know this problem is done.

If after you line up the place values,
there are spaces to the right that you didn’t use,
you can choose to write zeroes, and the content
